Underwear As Outerwear

Underwear As Outerwear

The trend of flaunting one’s underwear in creative and daring ways is making a mark both on the runways and on the streets and seems to be gaining popularity among fashionistas.

I see London, I see France, I see someone’s underpants!

The trend of flaunting one’s underwear in creative and daring ways is making a mark both on the runways and on the streets and seems to be gaining popularity among fashionistas.

One moment we can trace this trend back to was when Madonna wore her infamous cone bustier whilst performing onstage in the 1990s. This bustier is now making its way around some of the most famous museums worldwide 30 years later and continues to be an iconic mark of fashion in the decade.

Although this trend has been prominent for many years, we are seeing more and more by the minute. From casual outings to Galas, this trend is snapped everywhere! It expresses a sense of rebellion and daringness as we settle in this ‘post-pandemic’ era. After getting used to being locked up at home for months, consumers got used to lounging around in their underwear all day with no judgement. Now, fashion houses are trying to bring this sense of nonchalance and care-free aesthetic to the streets with the likes of Emily Ratajakowsky wearing completely see-through dresses to parties as well as Kendall Jenner hitting the streets in nothing but a sweater and stockings.

Sure, we’ve seen the trend of underwear as outerwear before, but this time it’s coming in with a more street-style-friendly twist.

Can you believe that in the 1950s wearing nothing but a white tee-shirt without a button-down shirt for men was seen as going out in underwear? Hollywood heartthrobs, Marlon Brando and James Dean were the pioneers of this movement, sparking a whole generation of rebellious teens to make radical political statements by wearing nothing but white tees. The white tee is now the norm. Will lingerie-as-outerwear make it to this point?

With the likes of Julia Fox doing the most mundane thing such as her groceries in nothing but Alexander Wang underwear, anything is possible! Could Julia Fox be the next Marlon Brando? She claims that fashion rules are made to be broken and she is doing exactly this.

This trend is encouraging lingerie brands to keep creating and adapting underwear as outerwear collections. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the lingerie industry to further develop and encourage different ways of styling their underwear. This strappy bralette style has more room to grow and morph into all sorts of inventive shapes to keep up with this trend of underwear as outerwear. Now that the world can see it, one might make more of an effort and feel more encouraged to purchase intricate and fun new styles. There is so much room for invention in this sector and at LCE we can help you come up with some of these new innovative designs as well as bring them to life.

They say “less is more” and it seems this is being taken quite literally as the idea of what is “socially acceptable” to wear in public is slowly but surely being broken down.

Who is rocking this trend?

Jean Paul Gaultier and the bustier resurfacing amid the Bridgerton and Euphoria days is no coincidence. This luxury powerhouse may not have the biggest following or even a catwalk to show its latest designs but it mastered being at the forefront of the digital space with the return of the bustier and other vintage styles they’ve been pulling out of its archives. They featured a couple of pieces in the show Euphoria and ensured all the biggest celebs wear their pieces out and about being caught by the paps here and there.

Versace and the corset, a signature look from the 90s. Gianni Versace’s corset is making a strong comeback after being spotted at various celeb weddings, on-stage, and at awards … Donatella brought back a re-imagined version of her brothers’ classic corset that overtook the 90s.
